On Sunday, the students of the BHU Deveni College in Dharavi in Uttar Pradesh began their first day of class by reading from the book ‘How To Read’.
The first section of the book begins with a brief overview of the three main types of print — printed, coloured and electronic.
“This is one of the first books I’ve read where the book itself is the instruction,” said student Srinivas Ranganath.
“It is also a way to teach the students about the basics of literacy.”
The class was led by BH Ute and a teacher who spoke about literacy in India, and how different people read.
While students are learning about different types of printing, they also get to take a quiz about their reading skills.
The BH UP class started on Sunday with the aim of spreading literacy to the community.
Students are given a basic knowledge of different types and formats of print, and their first question to the teacher was “Do you think this is a book worth reading?”
The students read from the cover of the novel ‘HowToRead’ by Hari Kunzru.
