Rights activists have demanded the recognition of a national language to the sign language. “The sign language is used by deaf people as a means of communications and this must be nationalised,” Rapti Deaf Association director Prativa Sharma said at a programme organised here today to mark the First International Day of Sign Languages (September 23) proclaimed by the United Nations.

Association Chair Ajay Kumar Sharma said deaf people face difficulties in their everyday life as their gestures and languages are not easily understood by others. He was of the view that every school, government offices and service providing bodies should compulsorily hire human resources able to understand and communicate sign languages for the convenience of deaf people.Tulsipur sub metropolis deputy mayor Maya Acharya promised initiation for the rights of the deaf.

Similarly, Province 5 State Assembly member Uttar Kumar Oli promised to start preparations to enact laws for the rights of such community.
The data puts the number of deaf people in the district at over 5,000 and the district has two special schools for deaf.
